The inspiration behind this is a volcano in Japan called Mt Yotei. It is visible from the amazing ski resort Niseko. It often has this "halo" of cloud hovering around the top and it is quite simply spectacular on a sunny day. I spent 2 winters living and working in Niseko and this iconic volcano was on my hitlist to hike up. The day came that weather was perfect so a group of us got up before dawn and started our ascent. With snowshoes on and snowboard clipped to my backpack it took 4 and a half hours to get to the top. It was scarier than I had anticipated because as we were towards the top it was getting pretty icy and very windy! It felt like I might get blown off the mountain! But we made it and then got the glory of snowboarding into the crater! It is quite an experience snowboarding into a crater of a volcano. It was not particularly great snow but the view was amazing. Then we hiked back out and made our way back to the car. It was a day I will always remember and I can't wait to go back and do it again.
